Lost: Skate angst
Know what pisses me off?  Being compared to a Harmonian.

Know what pisses me off more than being compared to a Harmonian?  Being compared to a Harmonian by members of a fanbase so similar to the Harmonians that it makes my eyes bleed.

Here's the thing.  Star Wars?  Totally influences the producers of Lost.  Harry Potter?  Also, totally influences them.  To the point that they barely go an interview without mentioning it these days.

Let's look at the central characters in these tales, shall we?

Star Wars: Here, our trio is Luke, Leia and Han.  Luke and Leia are siblings, but they don't figure it out for a long time: they have a certain connection but they don't know what it means.  Han loves Leia, and even at the very end he's willing to let her go to Luke if that's what she wants.  But no, Leia loves Han.  So, the trio consists of the hero, the heroine and their best friend and heroine/best friend is OTP.

Harry Potter:  The Trio, is Harry, Hermione and Ron.  Harry and Hermione are like siblings, as Harry attests to in the 7th novel: they have always got on well, but she pisses him off at times with her nagging, though they care for one another deeply.  Ron loves Hermione, but he is tortured by the idea that he is not enough of a hero for her, and although it kills him (metaphorically, you understand) he's willing to stay out of Harry's way.  But Hermione loves Ron, and always has.  So, The Trio consists of the hero, the heroine and their bestest friend and heroine/bestest friend is OTP.

On the basis of these classic 20th Century love triangles, would anyone like to take a go at the trio of Lost?  Too easy, you say?  I KNOW.

And yet, it seems some people just forgot to read their Joseph Campbell.

I so can't be doing with this stuff.  Why is there never a fandom that just gets along nicely?  At least at this point most people in HP fandom are pretty experienced with the whole thing and don't make me head desk all day.  Or in this specific little corner of HP fandom, where everyone I love/who is awesome hangs out anyways.

You know what pisses me off?  [info]daily_snitch and their recs.  I don't think I've ever seen them rec het, femslash or gen.  It's always bloody slash, and it's usually Harry/Draco or Harry/Snape.  That's not a fandom newsletter, that's a slash newsletter.  Which is why I love [info]quibbler_report so so so so much.  *hugs it*

Oh and a big thank you to all of you who commented on the anon meme, you made me feel fuzzy and nice and etc.  I was shocked at the lack of drama as I often annoy myself so I assumed that would also be the case with my flist, lol.  I think that one thing is clear though, and that's that I need to reconnect with many of you.  And guess what?  I will be able to from now on, as I'm handing in my last essay today!

Also, if you haven't seen the Twilight trailer yet, then go watch it right now.  [info]lusushi I am looking at you.  You will come with me to see it.  For the lulz.

So they're saying that Skate is like Harry/Hermione? Er... okay. *sigh* Why can't people just, you know, accept that different characters from different fandoms are - wait for it - different! ETA: Not a dig, btw. I realised it could come across like that. I meant the rabid 'my theory is right and you will bow down to it' sort of fangirl/boy.

Anyhoo, I know what you mean about the [info]daily_snitch. I don't watch it. I'd much rather watch [info]quibbler_report or [info]thegoldenseeker. They very rarely overlap and they give a balanced view of HP fandom.

Yeah apparently Skate = H/Hr and Skate shippers = Harmonians. Which, I've never been so offended, lol! I mean, you know me, I love non-canon ships, usually. Sawyer/Kate just happened to become canon after I started shipping them and ... yeah, I just don't get it.

I love [info]thegoldenseeker too: I like that they rec older stuff as well. I sometimes feel like after three days a fic goes out of date, which shouldn't be the case.

ETA: Oh I know, not a dig! :) You're right. They aren't the same, but if we must compare them, I think Sawyer/Kate as Han/Leia and Ron/Hermione makes a lot more sense.

Hee. One of the mods of [info]thegoldenseeker is on my flist (which probably explains why I even get recc'd there so often, lol). Trade secret: she told me a bit back that they're having to comb the archives for stuff - particularly for Ginny. I think things might have got a bit better recently though.

I know what you mean though, there are fics from two years ago that I thought never got enough exposure in the first place. Fanfic is sort of... throwaway. People read it and then forget it very easily. The fact that they bring out the older fics is sort of nice and refreshing.

And to be honest a lot of the older stuff is better than what is churned out today. I'm tired of seeing millions of drabbles and so-called 'fics' that don't even reach 1,000 words. It might be brilliant, but I appreciate something that is brilliant and 10,000 words far more.

Yes, definitely, I mean if I wasn't interested in a certain ship at the time a fic was posted I missed it and with the Golden Seeker you get that nice mix of old and new stuff and it is indeed refreshing :)

And it makes me feel warm and fuzzy when they rec my stuff lol :)

Oh, BB. *pets* Until your ship starts wank of EPIC FUCKING PROPORTIONS, it will never come close to being like the Harmoanians, no matter what the particular pairing dynamic is.

So don't worry. Other people are dum with stupid sauce, and you are way rad. <3

And, not that I disagree with what you said re: [info]daily_snitch, but idk, I don't know if it's fair to blame them? Yes, their recs are almost always slashy. But, as I understand it, they 'rec' based on what people in fandom are reccing all over the place. I think it's like, if they see it recced by 3 or more different people, then they consider it 'hot' and post it?

And HP is dominated by slash. I'm pretty sure slash outnumbers het, and definitely femmeslash by a ratio of like a bazillion to three. So there'll be more slashy recs than het. I think. Um.

So yeah, not trying to defend TDS, just pointing out that I think it's more a reflection of fandom trends as a whole, rather than the faults of the editors. [info]daily_snitch doesn't quite operate the way [info]quibbler_report does, with its reports of rarepairs whenever it finds them, regardless of what they are.

And I agree, [info]quibbler_report is radsauce. I ♥ it so. It's def my favorite. XD

See, we don't start wank, we do the whole point and mock thing like fandom_wank, just elsewhere. And how Lost fandom avoids fandom_wank I do not know, because it's the wankiest thing I've seen in a while.

Impending season finales make shippers crazy.

I guess you're right about [info]daily_snitch I just wish other genres were getting a little airtime. Even if there was a little more variation on the slash pairings that'd be good. But then all of this is on [info]quibbler_report anyways so I don't know why I'm complaining! :D

That's good and healthy, yes. :) And maybe there just aren't any wankas in the Lost fandom? Or not many? I think I've seen it once or twice, but not really much at all, or not recently. Or they just keep everything locked down tight? Feh.

I do too. And I don't know how TDS scans journals for what is being recced. They don't seem to have a watcher journal like QR or HT have. ??

I've been thinking about filling in a thinger to be a 'seeker' for TGS, but I keep not actually doing it. Mostly I just want to rec L/D all over the damn place. XD

Oh you should totally sign up to be a seeker! Yes yes yes *nods*

Most Lost wank happens on message boards rather than LJ, so it's a bit niggly I guess. But when it happens, boy does it happen!

Twilight = Not Anne Rice.

I wouldn't give my money to her either!

I'm in my ball dress, my hair is up and all is yay. I just need to find some makeup!

Fandom is batshit, that's all I can say. Or at least some fandoms are. By and large, HP and SW are the craziest I've been involved in, but these Lost people certainly sound like they'd be right up there too! I think that's why I've been hanging out more and more with BSG people lately. Sure, there are shipper wars over there (witness yesterday's post in [info]battlestar_blog, which I personally found way too amusing) but from my observation they almost never descend into the level of wank present in SW and HP. Why this should be so I'm not sure, but I will say that it's extraordinarily refreshing to see people actually able to discuss their differences rationally and calmly as opposed to resorting to petty name-calling and flaming.

Also had to speak up on the [info]daily_snitch thing. I will freely admit I've got a bit of a bias here, being Monday editor, but this has certainly been a source of debate for the editors for some time now. The issue is essentially with the way our rec system works - we rely on members of fandom to find them and then report them to us, and the rule is that the fic must have been recced on at least three separate journals before we will list it. The fic must also be relatively current. The effect of these rules is that most of our recs end up coming from the more popular ships on LJ, such as Harry/Draco or Harry/Snape as you mentioned. It's just a numbers game, I think, since the more popular the ship, the more fics will get written for it and there's more exposure, therefore more recs. It isn't fair, to be sure, and we are still discussing how precisely we should make it more equitable. We also have to balance the interests of competing shippers and somehow try to avoid the appearance of favouring a particular author or reccing something just because a bunch of that author's friends decided to try and get them spotlighted. It's very difficult, believe me, and we still haven't come up with a good solution!

Anyway, all this to say that I can certainly understand where you're coming from! Just wanted to give a bit of an opposite perspective, that's all. :)

I commented on that post just like 'yeah I would rather ship Kara/Sam but I can't seem to find anyone to ship with Lee' ... it was just asking for drama though that post!

Generally I see what you mean, BSG is quite laid back compared to other fandoms.

See I respect that's how the rec system works and whatnot, I would just like to see more of the other genres out there, you know? Like I said, Quibbler Report kind of gives me rec-wise what I'm looking for anyways but I just wish there was more of a variety on the Daily Snitch. Obviously more shippers mean more recs, but I fear it also means we all get into a rut and people start writing formulaic fics to get recced.

Though, I appreciate it must be hard to find a way of doing it that's fair and works.

And an opposite perspective is always good :) Else there would be no discussion!

You're so right about the influences of Star Wars and HP in Lost *nod*.

Thanks for the Twilight trailer. I like it :D. I still gotta read Eclipse though.

*yay* for your last essay!

A Jater (one of the Bubbleheads, I assume) compared you (or Skaters in general) to Harmonians??? Why?

You just never know what they're going to come up with next, do you? LOL
[info]butterfly_kate wrote:

LOL the batshit is almost too much for me! :)

It's the new Bubblehead trend, I think, comparing Skaters to Harmonians. Because we're totally that level of crazy: I know when Jate happened I went to the Fuse and started spouting venom about Kate and the writers. Totally. Because I am that disgusting.

*biggest eye roll ever*
