HP Goes Bang?

  • Jun. 11th, 2008 at 12:44 PM
HP: Luna
I've been toying with the idea of setting this up for a while now, as some of my flist may know, so now I'm basically testing the waters.

In this post, I want to gauge interest in a possible Big Bang style challenge for HP fandom.  There's already one very successful version of it in the fandom and it focuses on Harry/Draco.  You can find it at [info]big_bang_hd.  I found out about this kind of challenge last year through [info]heroes_bigboom, (though due to my last laptop I never completed the challenge).  There's also [info]spn_j2_bigbang in Supernatural fandom, [info]svbigbang in Smallville fandom, [info]sgabigbang in Stargate: Atlantis fandom and [info]tardis_bigbang in Doctor Who fandom.  You can take a look at those communities to get a feel for what it's all about, or hey, they might appeal to you more than HP!

In short, in a Big Bang challenge, writers create a story of usually 20,000 words and up. Then at the end of the first draft period, these writers are paired up with artists and vidders, who create a piece of art or a vid to accompany the story.  It requires a lot of effort, but it's also a lot of fun and produces some great fanwork for everyone to enjoy.

The idea that I've been toying with is that there's a broader Big Bang for HP fandom, or one that would appeal to those who aren't part of the slashy sector of it :)

Do comment with ideas and opinions: if you really think we're over saturated with fests in this fandom and this would be one too many, let me know! There's no point doing it if the interest isn't there.

I think this is a FAB idea, BB. And I might even be willing/able to help you organize/whatever, if I can tone down/finish the rest of my commitments.

I don't think I could participate though. :( Cause there's no way in hell I think I'd be able to write something even 10,000 words long. When I finish something 3000+ I'm all "DAYUM, that was long."

But I support this idea muchly.

Also, HI. I feel like I haven't talked to you in ages.

OMG your help would be awesome because I feel you are good at these sorts of things :)

And I did think of you when typing up the word count because you're little miss one shot! Hehe.

Where have you been anyway? And where have I been?! I feel the same way. *squish*

I am good at getting things organized (kinda) and then absolutely BATSHITNUTTO when it comes to keeping them organized. Lulz. But I will certainly try. Especially if this is something that's going to happen towards the end of summer or something. It's a) a cool idea and 2) you. XD

little miss one shot

THIS IS BECAUSE I AM DUM AT PLOT. PLOT? WHAT'S THAT?

Sucks too, cause I've always wanted to do a fic/art collab one day. Ah well, I'll save it for another time, and get my kicks vicariously. :D

I'm not sure when it would happen, because it needs to be something with quite a long writing time, but at the same time needs to avoid clashing with too many other fests and exchanges and whatnot you know?

I have trouble with plot too. Most of my stuff is like, 'hmm, let's mill around in Luna's brain for a couple of thousand words!'

I think the idea rocks, but I struggle just to write lengthier one-shots. Even 10,000 would kill me probably. Plus, then I'd have all that guilt about my three abandoned novels and my Nano novel that I've yet to edit... But...the idea is fascinating and you've got me intrigued!

Yeah the unfinished guilt is something I'm a little too familiar with myself! It would be a long writing period - longish anyways. But like I say, I'm testing the waters! :)

Hey-lo, hun. Just wondering, do you want me to pimp this to my flist? I have a ton of HP writers on there.

That would be brilliant, if you could :) Love the icon, btw, it reminds me of Daisy off Spaced!

Okies, will do.

And I hadn't thought of that but yeah, you're right...

Here from [info]humbuggirl's lj, I like the idea. But not with a 25000 min! Woah! But if it was shorter definitely. :)

Haha yes, 25,000 is rather a lot! I'm currently thinking 10 or 15 would be about right, especially as it might be the first time a lot of people had written something longer for a fest etc. :)

*waves* I followed the link from [info]humbuggirl's journal. I really like this idea and would definitely be interested in participating if there was plenty of time...and I got to definitely pick the 'ship I write.

*waves back* Thanks for stopping by!

There would definitely have to be plenty of time indeed!

And I don't think there would be any limits on ships or anything like that. Basically it would be an open challenge, but maybe with a theme.

!!!
Found this post by way of [info]quibbler_report, and I'd just like to say it's a fantastic idea. I myself tried to write for the H/D Big Bang, but didn't manage to finish, so it would be nice to see another one in this fandom. The idea that it could focus on HP girls or something more plot-oriented appeals to me. There can never be too much femmeslash or gen. :)

About the word count, though, I think a higher limit like the one similar in the H/D BB (50,000 words) would be more appropriate because it takes greater dedication. As you said, there are loads of fests out there, so this one has to be more challenging in some way length-wise.

Hopefully, you will get persuaded to host it/be involved.

Cheers!
Virginia

Re: !!!
Hey thanks for weighing in!

Personally, I'd like a higher word limit too, but I just don't think that many people will be willing to sign up for the first round. I'm thinking maybe start at fifteen or twenty thousand and then increase as we go. Though I would of course encourage people to go beyond that minimum anyways. :)

Re: !!!
I think the secret would be to make the fest as appealing as possible, visually and thematically. I'm sure a plethora of people will jump to proclaim their involvement, but it will only get down to a few who will actually finish and have something to brag about.

Taken that way, I'm still lobbying for higher word counts because that's the challenge, for me at least. The concepts come easily because I love what I write, but the real test is whether I can write coherently for 50,000 words and make it entertaining for others.

Now I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes if you indeed decide to host the fest. It should make for great reading material when it's all finished (and great art and vids also, of course).

I would love an HP bang! I seem to develop nothing but epic plots anyway. My problem with writing long stories, is I can't do it alone. I need support. I need someone reading my drafts and cheering me on. :) I'm also an artist, btw. What I would love, is to have a "secret" society for support during the draft process. This could be a locked community, or a forum, where writers, betas, and artists can post to offer support, encouragement, suggestions, corrections, etc. Once a final draft is written, artists do their thing, and then the fics and art are posted publicly.

I think if we got together a group of people who want to do this, and we all supported each other, then writing a 50,000 word fic in six months would be a snap.
